A Certain Alchemy: Photographs of Keith Carter
432-683-2882, Museum of the Southwest, Keith carter is an internationally recognized Texas photographer and educator.  He holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.  In 1997 Keith Carter was the subject of an arts profile on the national network television show, CBS Sunday Morning.  In 1998, he received Lamar University's highest teaching honor, the University Professor Award, and he was named the Lamar University Distinguished Lecturer.  Organized by the Wittliff Gallery at Southwest Texas State University.  No admission charged.

The Other Side of the West: Recreating New Icons of the 
American West

Oxymorons: Absurdly Logical Quilts

432-683-2882, Museum of the Southwest, More than 40 art quilts will be displayed in this exhibition based on oxymorons, the juxtaposition of completely contradictory words.  By fusing language and visual fiber art, imagination soars to unlimited realms.  Many recall a mother, aunt, grandmother or family friend who made quilts.  Such humble and homey roots lend an air of accessibility to the art quilt.  Using traditional quilting techniques in non-traditional ways, art quilts have become a means of expression for artists.  These artists deal with the same issues, themes, and design concerns explored by artists in other media.  Sponsored by the American Quilter's Society.  No admission charged.  Call for information.

From generation to generation, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band brings the flavor of New Orleans jazz to stages across America.  Direct from the New Orleans French Quarter, the band delights audiences with classic tunes like "I Ain't Nobody," "Tiger Rag" and "Bill Bailey."  Originating in the early part of the century, New Orleans Jazz is not to be confused with the two-beat Dixieland style.  The tempo is a shade slower than the other jazz forms and the melody is always clearly heard with improvisation at its heart. Unobscured by complicated arrangements, its greatness lies in its simplicity.  Bands generally consist of five to seven pieces, with the trumpet usually the musical leader. FREE - ticket required
